Anyone who knows me will tell you that I just love A-1 Sauce. While on the cruise ship this past December the Maitre D chose to bring me my own personal bottle. Here is a recipe with A-1. This is a quick and easy version of the famous Philly Cheesesteak sandwich – great for picnics. Ingredients 2 med yellow onions 2 6 oz pkgs sliced roast beef lunch meat 12 American Cheese Slices (or Swiss, Provolone, Cheese Wiz or other choice) 12 Italian Bread Slices 3 T A-1 sauce per sandwich (approximate) Directions Sautee onions in pan. In my opinion, a good Philly sandwich should always be served “wit”*. Add roast beef, scramble into smaller pieces and heat thoroughly. I also add a little bit of A-1 while cooking – probably 2 Tablespoons and a dash of fresh ground pepper to taste. Toast bread slices. Put 1 ½ T A-1 on each of the 2 slices. Layer onion/beef mixture on bottom slice, add 2 slices cheese (or cheese whiz) and top with other slice of bread. For a picnic, place inside baggies so that the captured heat melts the cheese. You can use traditional hoagie rolls instead of the Italian bread slices if you prefer. Wow! This is fantastic!! Serves 6. Prep time only 10-15 min! Easy, cheesy, Philly! *wit: This is something I first learned on the Food Network. In south Philadelphia, there is a cultural protocol for ordering your Philly cheesesteak. “Wit” (or “wid”) simply means “with onions”. Here are some examples of ordering when in Philly:
